Edward Rating Scale
So what is an “Edward”?
An” Edward” is a unit of measurment, smiliar to a Newton or the Kelvin
The Edward scale is a rating scale that represents how my dog Eddie (or Edward as he likes to be called when were discussing the finer things in life like Chaucer and Monet) and I feel regarding anything we are into.
I came up with this scale primarily because Eddie and I often times sit together for extended periods of time discussing a movie that we just watched or the sweet lyrics of a new Brother Ali song or how delightful Prince Among Thieves still is today more than ten years after it was released. We also dive into books. We tend to read in spurts, sometimes reading 5 books in 3 months or 3 books in 5 months. Edward like myself, likes to mix things up. We read everything from Dan Brown,Seth Godin and John Steinbeck. Edward once quoted the Roman Rhetorician, Quintilian saying, “Our minds are like our stomachs; they are whetted by the change of their food, and variety supplies both with fresh appetites.” Such a smart dog!
The primary reason why my rating scale is called the Edward scale is because somehow we seem to agree on everything. For instance, we will be discussing the difference between Jack Reacher in the first person novels as opposed to the third person novels when my wife will interrupt from the other room with a “What?” thinking I’m asking her a question. Edward and I will exchange a glance of mutual understanding and go back to our discussion. We’ve developed a sort of telepathic relationship where neither of us really needs to say anything out loud but the other always somehow understands and pushes the conversation forward….hence the Edward scale.
1 out of 5 Edwards: Spending the day in my kennel….Boooring!
2 out of 5 Edwards: The same dog food I had last night…and last month.
3 out of 5 Edwards: A new bone. Pretty cool but what are we doing later?
4 out of 5 Edwards: Going on a walk, nice!
5 out of 5 Edwards: Going to the dog park, Booyah!
